How can I get my website into the top listings of the major search engines?

This is a whole area of computer science called SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and is a very difficult thing to do. It is also an ongoing process. Each search engine has it's own way of ranking pages and generally each one has it's own advertising programme as well although some engines.

Generally speaking your site will be ranked based upon the quality of the content and the links that you have from 3rd party sites with quality related content.

It is easier to get a higher ranking on a narrow search term that includes several words than a broad search term with 1 or few words. You will also find that the visitors to your site are more targeted also.

The only way to be sure of a high ranking is to pay for a sponsored listing through an advertising scheme such as google adwords https://adwords.google.co.uk.
